What is your knee pain?
The knee joint can have many different causes, injuries and reasons behind the discomfort. The knee joint is the articulation between your thigh bone (femur) and tibia (shin) as well as the knee cap (patella) that situates in front of the tibiofemoral joint. The tibiofemoral joint is a synovial hinge joint allows flexion and extension (bending and straightening) to perform its function of movement as well as stability. The ligaments within and surrounding the knee joint provide static stability and the associated muscles are the active stabilisers. The knee also contains other protective tissues such as your menisci, which aids in stability, smoothness of motion and resilience to pressure. Bursae are fluid
filled sacs that provides cushioning between bones and muscles/tendons and the infrapatellar fat pad. All of these tissues can be injured through sport and exercise; strained through altered forces and pressure due to hip and foot/ankle stability; degenerative changes brought on with age and predisposed to by injuries and exercise over the years. Other causes can be referral pain from the lower back, sacroiliac joint and the hip. It is imperative to have the correct diagnosis of your knee pain in order to recieve the correct treatment and management for your pain or injury. You may require imaging, strengthening exercises or rest and bracing. For further information or to make an appointment, contact us on 0400 164 608 or email info@backintoosteopathy.com.au
